WARNING: This is a trip of a lifetime! The views and hikes are breathtaking (literally!)
The mister & I were given a generous honeymoon fund and a best-of-luck moving to Canada gift (thanks friends and family!) which we combined for a heli-hiking adventure in the Canadian Rockies. So far, it has been amazing. Run by the Canadian Mountain Holidays company who back in the 60’s were the pioneers of heli-sking, we are staying at the Bugaboo Lodge facing the Bugaboo mountain range and the only way to get here is by helicopter ( or serious off-roading vehicle).
So, what is heli-hiking? The way this works is that the lodge is built way up in the mountains in the middle of nowhere (but actually in the heart of beauty) and fly you each day to a new mountain range or panorama. Each “mission” involves you walking along the ridges and down through the valleys prioritising whatever your interests are–be it a casual mountain stroll, flowers and fauna, glaciers or towering spires.
Today, we started the day equipping ourselves with proper gear and safely briefings, and then set out on our first adventure at noon for a hike through the Rooftop Ridge and Rocky Point Basin. We got to “ski” down the rock scree (so much fun!) and saw snow-capped mountains, glacial runoff, varied rock formations, little wild flowers and weeds –when Lyle, our awesome guide reminded us of Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh: “Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.” 🙂
I heard tomorrow will be splendiferous. Check back soon!
